The Scaling Up methodology offers a practical and proven approach to providing direction and structure for growing companies. It helps organizations scale faster without losing control—by creating focus , setting priorities, and creating a rhythm of continuous improvement.

SCALING UP STEPS

Strategy

In this document you set out what your organisation stands for – your Purpose and Values –, what sets you apart, and what ultimate goal ( BHAG ) you are pursuing.

 

You also determine which customers you'll target, which products or services you 'll offer, and which market you want to grow in. The OPSP thus forms the core of the strategy: clear, concrete, and summarized on a single page, ensuring everyone in the company moves in the same direction.

Execution

Step two is determining the priorities and goals for the coming year—the concrete steps towards your Big Goal (BHAG). These are documented in an annual plan, in which clear OKRs (Objectives & Key Results) are formulated quarterly.

 

To ensure that goals are actually achieved and adjustments are made in a timely manner, you determine the heartbeat of the organization: the rhythm in which plans are revised, progress is measured, and teams learn from results.
The strategic plan is evaluated annually, priorities are refined quarterly, and progress and feedback are monitored monthly, weekly, and daily.

 

A key part of this is ensuring that relevant information about both financial performance and customer and employee insights is visible and up-to-date — so that decisions are based on facts and engagement.

People

Step three focuses on further developing your team . Growth is only sustainable if the organization is built on the right people in the right places.

 

This means that team members receive the coaching and support they need to grow in their roles, and that responsibilities and KPIs are clearly defined per process and department.
In addition, it is important that the management team works well together as a whole — with an open culture, clear communication and a shared sense of direction and ownership.

 

A strong, well-aligned team is the foundation for successful strategy execution and achieving growth goals.

Cash

Step four is about the resources needed for growth . Growth requires sufficient capacity and financial resources—to invest, hire new people, and seize opportunities.

 

At the same time, it's essential to grow efficiently : keeping costs under control and ensuring cash isn't unnecessarily tied up in working capital . This maintains financial flexibility to invest in what truly adds value and to finance growth sustainably.

 

A solid financial foundation ensures that the organization remains agile and is ready for the next growth phase.

STRATEGY &
ANNUAL PLAN

The starter package for implementing the Scaling Up methodology consists of two intensive two-day sessions.


During these sessions, the method will be explained, the One Page Strategic Plan (OPSP) will be drawn up and the annual plan for the first year will be determined.

 

In addition, a step-by-step plan is being drawn up for the further (independent) implementation of the Scaling Up methodology within the company.

EXECUTION &
PEOPLE

Additionally, a two-day follow-up session can be chosen in which roles and responsibilities are established and the heartbeat of the organization is determined.

 

This session can be expanded with coaching and a team workshop focused on collaboration, communication and effectiveness within the management team.

ANNUAL PLAN

The Scaling Up annual program offers a year of guidance on implementing the method. In addition to the strategy and execution sessions, there are two one-day quarterly reviews and a two-day closing session .

 

The program can be tailored to the specific needs and growth phase of the company in consultation.
